They say the Ganges River is the ferryman to salvation. Flowing through Bangladesh, the Ganges is one of the most sacred rivers to Hindus. While it is a place of worship, it is also the lifeline to millions of Indians who live along its course. When I was in Varanasi, I spent many boat rides on the Ganges. Floating along the river provided an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, as well as a momentary lapse into the continuous circle of life. I would watch people come to the water’s edge to sit in silence, pray, bathe, or discard the bodies of their deceased loved ones. The river’s unsung heroes — ferrymen with friendly faces and storytelling eyes — play an integral part in the river’s livelihood. And although I couldn’t communicate with them, I still felt a deep sense of connection in their presence.
